Clear your calendar - It's going down! The Emancipation Day festivities will take place on Saturday, April 13 and the parade will start at 2:00 PM at 10th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW. The concert kicks off at 3:00 PM and will feature an all-star lineup of some of the best artists in the game! The concert at Freedom Plaza will also feature many of DC's own homegrown talent. The Lakefront Film Fest, founded by DC Radio's own, Tim "Film" Gordon, host of "Keeping it Reel with FilmGordon," is a celebration of multi-cultural independent films that encompasses the artistry and excitement that only cinema can bring. Film enthusiasts will have the opportunity to experience over 40 new independent multicultural narrative features, documentaries, animation, web-series, short films, and studio preview screenings from July 25-27, 2019. The Multicultural Media Correspondents Association (MMCA), an advocacy organization leading a national call to action to increase media diversity, is hosting its 4th Annual Multicultural Media Correspondents Dinner (MMCDTM) #MMCD, at the National Press Club on July 9, 2019. The gala brings together media influencers, policymakers, executives, corporate and advocacy organization allies and Hollywood stars. Media legends and luminaries of color such as Tom Joyner, aka “The Fly Jock,” Congresswoman Val Demings (D-FL) and Parker Morse, CEO H Code will be honored. Each week, a DDOT team member discusses their area of expertise with Terry Owens, DDOT’s Public Information Officer and veteran broadcast journalist. The half hour show covers everything from major infrastructure projects to the District’s tree canopy and DDOT-managed transportation options like Capital Bikeshare and the DC Circulator. The #EntertainDC Office is pleased to recognize Kwame Edwards as our July 2019 Filmmaker of the Month! Kwame Edwards is a self-described aesthetic engineer - more specifically he is an ethnographic filmmaker, sociology professor, international education advocate, music enthusiast, and global Diaspora cultural connoisseur from Washington DC. His film work specializes in the experiences of the African Diaspora, in order to showcase overlooked narratives. His sociological perspective is grounded in structural functionalism, symbolic interactionism and conflict theory. In FY18, the #EntertainDC Office launched a creative economy job training support program in partnership with the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) Local 22. The program provides District residents financial subsidies to defray the costs of IASTE technical training classes. It also offers District resident IASTE members the opportunity to acquire the professional certifications required to rise up the IATSE classification tier. In turn, members can qualify for higher paying jobs and therefore pave a pathway to the middle class. On the first Thursday of each month, come out for IATSE's Open House located at the Local 22 office in Washington, DC. For more information, click HERE.
Members from the #EntertainDC Office's regulatory team met with several tenant groups - one of which was the IONA Senior Advocacy Group located in Ward 3. During the meeting, the team shared information about what the agency does and informed members about the many ways in which the #EntertainDC Office assists DC residents with cable television related matters. The group was also informed about RCN’s senior discount and Comcast’s Internet Essentials program and information about the DC Radio show, "Rememories for Seniors" hosted by Elliott Michael Gold.
